1999-00 UD HoloGrFX appears to have been an attempt by Upper Deck to stay relevant in the generation of video games and on-line activity. The set, which used holofoil technology on all cards, included special NHL Faceoff 2000 game cards, which could be used to spell out the video game’s name. Collectors who successfully spelled out the name using the gold or silver versions of the cards were eligible to win prizes that included a Playstation package. The card release itself didn’t offer anything overly exciting, beyond the odd autograph opportunity.
