The release of the Pokemon Generation 1 Team Rocket product marked the debut of several changes to the North American product. The release featured so called “Dark” Pokemon which were supposed to be a “evil” type of Pokemon, meant to be associated with the criminal gang that was Team Rocket. Released in April of 2000, after a considerable delay due to licensing conflicts between Wizards of the Coast and Nintendo. The dispute revolved around the inclusion of “Dark Raichu” which was included as a “secret” card that was numbered beyond the normal numbering system.
In addition to the Dark Raichu card, Team Rocket also was the first North American release to include a bonus Japanese card, which was the “Here Comes Team Rocket” card and was considered a Super Rare and was indicated by a White Star in the rarity corner. The release was also the first to include holofoil Energy and Trainer cards, including the Rainbow Energy card, which was a “any type” card to be used in the trading card game. Wizards of the Coast also released a Strategy Guide to accompany the set, which helped to explain the changes of the newest release.
